I saw this in 2007 or so at a movie theatre in LA with some friends of mine who I was working on a film with at the time. Timmy Wisseau even did an introduction and Q&A for it, which was amazing. At the time, he still hadn’t realized that people were there to mock it and thanked us for coming out because we’re the only people who understood his vision. The only thing I can think to compare it to is seeing Rocky Horror at The Waverly with regards to participation. It was pretty amazing. People were throwing spoons at the screen whenever the bad interior design spoon art appeared, whenever Lisa’s mom appeared everyone yelled “you have cancer!,” and a whole bunch of “oh hai ___” to random objects. It’s pretty amazing. Now he claims it was meant as a dark comedy, but this was definitely not the case back then.

Have you ever seen the Rifftrax for it? It’s not as good as seeing it in person, but still pretty amazeballs.

I’ve been meaning to get it. Bill Corbett talked about it some at DragonCon, and how eventually Tommy got around to “I don’t like what they’re doing, but it’s like... important artistically and they paid me, so I guess I support them 40%” or some such bizarre Wiseauism.

Haha, I’ll have to see if I can track down that interview. I bet it’s hilarious.

If you haven’t read the disaster artist I’d highly recommend.

Don’t read it. Listen to the audiobook. Greg Sestero does a masterful Tommy Wiseau voice, and it makes it amazing. “You look good Greg. Like Spartacus.”

Ah... The room. Wasn’t drunk enough to watch the first time or the second time.
Good times.
